Poor Worker Treatment
According to trade union representatives, the workers are striking over low pay, unhygienic working conditions, inadequate breaks and an unsafe working environment. There are also calls for an improved insurance offering, as well as action over what staff are calling “a discriminatory culture” at the firm.
The strike action is the culmination of tensions arising from leaked internal chat transcripts, which showed evidence of discrimination and disparaging remarks from Evolution Georgia management towards employees.
Despite the historic nature of the screenshots, some current staff have confirmed to local media that similar issues still prevail, amid a wider culture of discrimination at Evolution Georgia.
In a statement responding to the allegations, Evolution Georgia said it would “get to the bottom of the problem and take appropriate actions and increase our efforts to make sure that all employees adhere to, and respect, our common values.”
Repeat Allegations
The allegations are only the latest to be leveled at Evolution Georgia. In 2022, the company was reported to Georgia’s Public Defender over widespread allegations of sexual harassment.
Furthermore, the treatment of staff in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic saw the firm on the receiving end of a lawsuit on behalf of 14 employees who alleged they had been dismissed unfairly.
In its statement, Evolution noted the challenges of managing a workforce that runs to over 8,000 employees in Georgia, but reiterated its commitment to operating within local employment laws as it develops its office in the country.
